How to set up a Garmin GPSMAP 64st to the San Benito County Sheriff SAR Standard

Brand New Version July 22, 2018



Note: To manipulate the GPS to different screen, use the “Page” and “Quit” buttons to cycle through the ribbon menu. Once you’re at the selection you want, the unit will take you to that screen or you can press “Enter” to go there immediately.

For the menu items, you can use “Enter” to enter the sub-menus or screens and use “Enter” to select your values. “Quit” returns you back up a level in the menus.

Use the arrow keys and the “Enter” key on keyboard screens to type out what you want and “Quit” to abort back to the previous screen.

Note: This is not a touch screen device, all entry is done via the physical keys below the screen.


I. Set Up the Ribbon Menu

  1. From out of the box condition, use “Page” and “Quit” buttons to find “Main Menu” – If “SetUp” is on the Ribbon Menu, go to “SetUp” and skip to step #3.
  2. (Out of box only) Then select “Set Up”
  3. Select “Page Sequence”
  4. Add, delete and rearrange items on the “Page Sequence” page” by selecting “Add Page”

    …or press “Enter” on an item which brings up a page like this:

    Add, delete and move items on this page until it looks like this:

Your “Ribbon Menu” set up is complete. From here, use “Page” to move the menu ribbon forward and “Quit” to move the menu ribbon backwards

II. Set Up the Main Menu

  1. Return to the Main Menu…. (do not go to the SetUp Menu)

  2. Press “Menu”
  3. Use “Enter”, “Add Page” similar to as setting up the Ribbon Menu above to add, delete and reorder items until the list looks like the following:

III. Set Up the SetUp Menu

  1. Return to the SetUp Menu….

  2. Press “Menu”

    Use “Enter”, “Add Page” similar to as setting up the Ribbon Menu above to add, delete and reorder items until the list looks like the following:

Profiles

Use this once you’ve finished your configuration for the SAR format – Note the list of Profiles that there are, then select “Create Profile”. This will create a new entry at the bottom of the page called “Profile” with a number after it, such is “Profile 7”. Select that one, press “Enter” and there is an option to “Edit Name” and change it to “XBE SAR”, then use “Move Up” to move it higher in the list of profiles repeatedly (takes about 6 times) to move it to the top (or wherever you prefer)

IV. Set up the Map

  1. Select “Map” from the Ribbon Menu
  2. Press “Menu”
  3. Select “Change Data Fields” and press “Enter”
  4. The Data Field should have a blue/turquoise background color then Press “Enter”
  5. Select “Location (selected)” and press “Enter”
  6. The Data Field should have a blue/turquoise background color then Press “Quit”
  7. Should look like this

V. Set up the Trip Computer

  1. Select “Trip Computer” from the Ribbon Menu (note: if your GPS is active, there will not be a red “X” for the GPS signal at the upper right)
  2. Press “Menu”
  3. Select “Big Numbers” if it is on the menu and press “Enter” – Skip this step if it already says “Small Numbers”
  4. Select “Change Dashboard” and press “Enter”
  5. Select “Large Data Field” and press “Enter”
  6. Select “Change Data Fields” and press “Enter”
  7. Select the top field and press “Enter”
  8. Select “Location (lat/lon)” and press “Enter”
  9. Select the middle field and press “Enter”
  10. Select “Location (selected)” and press “Enter”
  11. Select the bottom field and press “Enter”

  12. Select “Trip Odometer” and press “Enter”

  13. Press “Quit” and it should look like this:

This way you always can use this view to see the Degrees-Minutes-Seconds data that is often used for navigation and then whatever coordination system your mission uses in the middle field and you can see how far you have traveled


VI. Resetting your GPS Before A Mission

  1. Select “SetUp” from the Ribbon Menu
  2. Select “Reset” and press “Enter”
  3. Select “Clear Tracks and Trip Data” and press “Enter”
  4. Select “Yes” and press “Enter” to confirm
  5. Optionally you may want to clear your way points as well – to do so select “Delete All Waypoints” and press “Enter”
  6. Select “Yes” and press “Enter” to confirm
